Shares Outstanding

The total number of shares the company has issued. Multiply it by the share price and you get the market capitalization — the whole company’s value. It also matters for dilution: if a company keeps issuing new shares, each existing share owns a smaller slice of the business, so watch whether the count is rising over time. Buybacks do the reverse, shrinking the count and lifting each share’s claim on earnings.
