Sector
The broad industry group the company belongs to, such as Financials, Technology, or Energy. It matters more than it first appears: every metric behind a Meridian grade is measured against sector peers, so the sector is the yardstick a company’s numbers are held to before the factor itself is ranked across the whole rated market. A “cheap” bank and a “cheap” software company are judged on completely different terms, because what counts as a normal profit margin, growth rate, or valuation varies enormously from one sector to the next. Knowing the sector also tells you what economic forces move the stock — rates for banks, oil prices for energy, consumer spending for retail.
