Analyst Expectations

Where the Wall Street analysts who cover this company currently stand, and which way their view is moving — ranked against peers. Two things go into it: how bullish the ratings are (the share of analysts rating the stock Buy or Strong Buy, and that share net of the Sell ratings), and the consensus price target (how much upside it implies from today’s price, and whether analysts have been raising or cutting it). More buy ratings and a rising target score higher. It matters because analysts move their targets gradually as new information arrives, so a target being marked up is often the earliest visible sign of a re-rating, while one being cut warns the business is softening before it fully shows in the price. Read it as a “which way is the wind blowing” signal — confirmation when it agrees with the other factors, a caution flag when it doesn’t. The catch: analysts are slow to change their stance and rarely publish outright Sells, so a bullish consensus is normal and it is the CHANGE that carries the information.
